[Don Giovanni] (…) Adam Banaszak, the still young though already mature conductor whose accomplishments I am pretty well familiar with from Poznań and Łódź, stood in front of the orchestra. He splendidly led the performance tingeing its timbral nuances from subtle piano to fiery forte, perfectly accompanying the soloists, and adjusting particular tempos to performers’ individual qualities.

It was with profound grasp of the detail, imposing attention to the timbre, care of expressive changes of the moods and tempos contained in different parts of the composition that Adam Banaszak, the current Artistic Director of Wielki Theatre in Łódź, conducted the soloists, orchestra, and choir. After numerous misfortunes to have befallen the illustrious Łódź ensemble, here is an artist who communicates with the soloists, musicians of the orchestra, and choristers using their language, who sides with them, and who is able to incline them to work towards achieving a common goal.

To my beloved Theatre I wish many more performances as successful as this of Don Carlos, and to Adam Banaszak (whom Director Stachura aptly nominated for the post of Artistic Director, an appointment endorsed by Marshall of the Province), who conducted the performance, I wish perseverance, patience, diligence and good rapport with performers, all of which he fully revealed already in his first season. What I need not wish him is talent, as he does possess a whole range of it, complete with musicality, stylistic sensibility, clear-cut manual technique, as well as personal culture and elocutionary skills⎯which was not always the case with conductors in the rich history of Wielki Theatre in Łódź.

Paradoxically, it is music that is the greatest triumph of the Wrocław ballet performance. It is immaterial that the orchestra of Wrocław Opera should perform on contemporary instruments, which happens very rarely these days. Adam Banaszak, the music director, has so inspired the musicians that music at the premiere sparkled with grace, lightness, and Baroque charm.

[The Marriage of Figaro] At the conductor stand, Adam Banaszak captivated the audience with dynamics, lightness, and elegance subtly elicited from Mozart’s score, while, at the same time, retaining unusual precision with which he led all ensembles. Under his baton, the orchestra play brilliantly and with panache. These are already the opening chords of the overture that put listeners in a great mood and offer an insight into the joy they are about to experience.

On the other hand, I owe full recognition to the interpretation and musical delivery of the whole. As conductor, Adam Banaszak is for me a genuine discovery. His recent concert at the Philharmonic in Poznań, which featured an interesting selection of ballet repertoire fragments preceded with a spot-on address to the audience and followed by Ukraine’s national anthem, and now The Marriage of Figaro in Łódź show that a thoroughbred opera conductor has been born in Poland. Talented, competent, musically sensitive, manually conspicuous, and, at the same time, precise and well-balanced.
